In the pre-Internet era, artists seeking visibility and legitimacy were required to submit their work to cultural gatekeepers (i.e., curators and gallery owners) before the public was allowed to see it. The advent of near-universal access to cyberspace eroded that filter, making the inchoate doodles of any two-bit hack with an Instagram account instantly accessible to an international audience. While museums, art galleries, and performance venues were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, genuinely gifted creatives who took refuge online in an attempt to maintain visibility found themselves competing for attention with unprofessional riffraff like me. Even I found the situation undignified and embarrassing (...but not enough to inhibit my dilettantish posturing). So, to put the aspirationally avant-garde gewgaws described herein into social and aesthetic perspective, think of those works as little more than amateur crafts projects, the artistic equivalent of a popsicle-stick birdhouse decorated with macaroni shells and sequins, or a black velvet paint-by-numbers Elvis portrait.
